Job Description

  • This position is for College of Integrative Studies (CIS / IPCC Working Group II Technical Support Unit).
  • Support the development of communications materials for the Working Group II TSU during the IPCC Seventh Assessment cycle so as to effectively convey scientific findings to policymakers, stakeholders, and non-specialist audiences.
  • Assist authors in the outreach and communication of reports produced by the Working Group II, ensuring that scientific information is effectively conveyed to the target audiences.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of webpages related to the activities and products of the Working Group II TSU and ensure that the web content is current, accurate, and engaging for diverse audiences.
  • Support regional outreach efforts to disseminate IPCC findings and engage stakeholders at the local and regional levels.
  • Work alongside communications experts from other TSUs and the IPCC Secretariat to facilitate coordinated and enhanced communication efforts.
  • Collaborate with contracted experts to leverage their specialized skills and contribute to the overall communication strategy.
  • Develop methods and products for communicating IPCC findings, ensuring innovation and effectiveness in reaching different audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Masters’ degree in communications, marketing or a relevant field; with at least 7 years of related work experience.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural team or on international projects;
  • Planning, organizing and executing multi-task workloads;
  • Communicating complex scientific concepts of a specialized or technical nature for a wider non-specialist audience;
  • Working with stakeholders from governments and international organizations;
  • Organizing national, regional and international outreach events, also in the Global South.
  • Fluency in oral and written English.
  • Fluency in another UN language would be an advantage.
  • Excellent social skills and capability to interact with international science community.
  • Stress-resistance and ability to work precisely and effectively under time constraints.
  • Experience working in climate science communication and/or a climate-related field would be desirable.
  • Experience working with the UN, in particular with IPCC, would be an asset.
  • Proficiency working with a desktop publishing software or a graphics development package would be an asset.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.

Candidates who do not possess the stipulated qualifications but have relevant work experience may still apply. Remuneration and appointment terms shall commensurate with qualifications and experience. SMU reserves the right to modify the appointment terms where necessary.
