José Romero holds a PhD in physics from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where he worked as a researcher until 1989. He then worked as a senior scientist at the World Radiation Center in Davos, Switzerland, until 1996. Until 2021, he worked for the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), where he held various positions, most recently as Chief Scientist Environment International. During his time at the FOEN, he was the Swiss focal point for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and for the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He also represented Switzerland in the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), where he was a member of the executive committee.
